When we recall a distressing memory we may feel negative emotions such as sadness, anger, guilt, anxiety, fear etc. Accepted wisdom is that this process (remembering and feeling) is entirely contained within the mind.
But there is an intermediate step between the remembering and the feeling and that is our energy systems becoming disrupted. It's this disruption that causes the negative feelings not the memory itself.
Soothing the Disruption
EFT is applied by tuning into the problem and clearing the energy disruptions by tapping certain energy meridian points. It sounds weird to many but the results are often remarkable. It the issue was a troublesome or traumatic memory for example and EFT had been applied to it, the memory would be able to be recalled without any negative emotions. It becomes just one of those things that happened. This is desired end product of conventional talk therapies but it can be achieved much more quickly with EFT. Typically, a memory could be expected to be neutralised like this in one session.

How Do These Energy Disruptions Affect Us?
We all accumulate these imbalances or disruptions in our systems as we go through life's trials and tribulations. Many of us trundle along through life until we reach a tipping point for our energy systems. We may then start to experience ill health or growing anxiety etc.
As we grow up we accumulate beliefs from what we experience and what we are told, particularly as young children. Our energy systems appear to store experiences and emotions. We are constantly subconsciously reminded of past events. We may remember a specific memory or we hear certain words (songs and smells in particular are capable of transporting us back into the past in an instant with all the associated feelings of that time, good or bad). There may be a similarity between a current event and something in the dim and distant past. It may not be exact but the subconscious mind is good at generalising and making connections ("something is like something else").
When our mind makes such a connection, our energy systems also recalls the past disruption. We may then have a negative emotional response that maybe bewildering to us and bear no comparison to what may be actually happening at the time. This is how someone "pushes our buttons" and we may experience an over-reaction. From this we can see how even our behaviour is directly connected to unresolved emotional issues stored in our subtle energy systems.
Left unchecked some energetic imbalances can become chronic and build up and even cause physical pain. These pains will usually have emotional contributors and can be resistant to pain killing medication and keep returning. Many of our physical pains and diseases have significant emotional contributors.

The founder of EFT, Gary Craig, describes EFT as "an emotional version of acupuncture except needles aren't necessary. Instead, you stimulate well established energy meridian points on your body by tapping on them with your fingertips."
The essence of EFT lies in the following statement:
"The cause of all negative emotions is a disruption in the body's energy system."
